Early May was a busy time for Barnet Labour campaigners in the lead up to the local elections. Activists and candidates worked tirelessly in the weeks before the election, manning stalls, knocking on doors, leafleting and telephone canvassing. Despite winning less council seats than hoped, we remain more determined than ever to achieve a fairer Barnet for all residents. As new and standing councillors settle into their roles and activists return to the business of fundraising and campaigning, there is little time to rest as we prepare for our Annual General Meeting on the 24th of June. This will take place at 3:30pm at Woodhouse College (Nl2 9EY) and is open to all members.
Towards the middle of the month Professor David Nutt gave an excellent and informative talk to Barnet residents on UK drug and alcohol policy. This was part of a series of educational talks organised by Chipping Barnet Labour which are free and open to anyone, so keep an eye out for future dates, as well as details of the return of our popular monthly music quiz and other events.
In other news around the borough, The Barnet Alliance for Public Services reconvened this week with renewed energy and enthusiasm for fighting cuts to our local and national public services.
BAPS is a non-politically affiliated coalition of residents, campaign groups and trade unions dedicated to defending public services in Barnet through campaigning activities. Originally formed in 2010 to oppose cuts to local services and resist the outsourcing of local authority responsibilities, BAPS now aims to meet on a weekly basis. In the first of these meetings they invited Barnet blogger ‘Mr Reasonable’ to present on Capita and their relationship with Barnet Council. Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer John McDonnell also popped in to speak with members and offer his encouragement. Barnet Alliance meetings will be taking place every Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Greek Cypriot Centre, 2 Britannia Rd, London N12 9RU
